How To Play Scrabble

Objective:

The goal of Scrabble is to score the most points by forming words on the game board using letter tiles.

Setup:

  1. Game Board: A 15×15 grid where you place your letter tiles to form words.
  2. Letter Tiles: Each player gets a set of letter tiles, which are drawn randomly from a bag. Each tile has a letter and a point value.
  3. Tile Rack: Each player has a rack to hold 7 tiles at a time.

Basic Rules:

  1. Starting the Game: The first player forms a word using their tiles, placing one tile on the center square (which doubles the word’s score).
  2. Forming Words: Words can be formed horizontally (left to right) or vertically (top to bottom). All words must be connected like a crossword puzzle.
  3. Scoring Points: Each letter has a point value. The total score of a word is the sum of the letter values, with special squares on the board providing bonuses:
    • Double Letter Score (DL): Doubles the score of the tile placed on it.
    • Triple Letter Score (TL): Triples the score of the tile placed on it.
    • Double Word Score (DW): Doubles the score of the entire word.
    • Triple Word Score (TW): Triples the score of the entire word.
  4. Replacing Tiles: After playing a word, draw new tiles from the bag to replenish your rack to 7 tiles.
  5. Challenges: If a player thinks a word is invalid (not a real word or misspelled), they can challenge it. If the word is invalid, the challenged player loses their turn. If the word is valid, the challenger loses their next turn.
  6. Ending the Game: The game ends when all tiles are played, or no more valid moves can be made. The player with the highest score wins.

Tips:

  • Use High-Value Tiles Wisely: Letters like Q, Z, X, and J have higher point values. Try to place them on DL or TL squares for maximum points.
  • Build on Existing Words: Add letters to existing words on the board to create new words and score points for both the new and existing words.
  • Save Your S’s and Blanks: These tiles are versatile and can help form multiple words or extend existing words for higher scores.
